Money Ritual

I was 15, growing up in my village, Negbenu in the Volta Region of Ghana. One day, we heard a cry from one of my elders sister, who have been lost, screaming and running towards the village square. We rush to the village square to witness what’s happening to her, and this is her story

She said “I was walking around Accra one day when I meet this friend of mine whom I sell with in the market. She was looking fresh and from my view, seems she’s become rich. I ask where she’s been, when she told me she has discovered a town in the Western Region of Ghana where foodstuffs are relatively cheap.

“In fact” she said “you can easily make millions within a month if you able to trade there, and if you like I can take you there”

Since, things were hard in Accra, I followed her to the village. We got there around 4pm and from all indications, the town looks clean and doesn’t seem at all as a farming town. She has rented a house which she was sharing with an elderly woman as her neighbor. We cook some ‘ampesie and kontombre stew’ Plantain and vegetable stew’. As soon as the food is ready, my friend ask me to eat, since it’s getting late, she want to rush to the farmer to inform him to reserve some foodstuffs for us.

“I didn’t eat immediately, I took the bread we bought from our journey, break a piece and gave the rest to the old lady in the house. She thank me and ask me about our mission here. I said ” we’ve come to buy foodstuffs to send it to Accra”

“The old lady was quite for sometime before saying “my daughter, though you don’t know me but you have given given me a bread. Please, take what I’m about to tell you seriously and abide by it”

She continues “Your friend didn’t bring you here to trade but rather, she brought you here for money rituals”

As soon as she said that I was shock and about to run out when she calls me

“Wait my daughter, don’t be afraid. If you will follow my instructions exactly, the rituals will turn to her”

I sat down and she continues ” don’t eat the food she cook. During midnight, she will sneak out silently, don’t fall asleep but let her assume that you are far asleep. About one hour time, she will call your name three times from outside. Don’t respond, and from there, you won’t see her again”

I thank the old lady and return to my room. My friend return around 7pm noticed I didn’t touch my food.

“Why didn’t you eat?” She ask

I showed her the piece of bread I broke from the one I gave to the old lady and said ‘ I have eaten. Look at how I eat the whole bread’

“Then thank God that you have eaten for me”

We slept, and from time to time, she was spying on me to see if I’m sleeping. I also will act as if I’m fast asleep. It was around 2am, when she wakes up, took her sandals in hand, sneak out from the room. I could hear her footsteps as she walks away. I sat down and cry my eyes out and prayed. As the old woman said, around 3am, I heard her call my name “Yaa”

I didn’t respond and she call the second time “Yaaaa”

The third call sounds like she was far away. In the morning, I park my belongings about to run out when the old woman stop me “If, you run away, you will go mad. Wait my daughter, a man will come here, follow him and see things for yourself”

Around 7:30 am, a man with long beard, wearing white clothes, comes to the house and ask the old lady “where’s the girl?”

The old woman calls me out and the man ask to follow him. We got to his shrine, pour some libations and ask me to look inside a well in front of the shrine. I look inside and to my surprise I, saw my friend under the water looking miserably. I get back very frightened, about to run when the man stops me “you will go mad if you step out”

He pour another libation and I saw my friend, popping out from the well, vomit a lot of money and return back when she finish.

The man said “My, daughter, this is what your friend brought you here for but you’re lucky that her evil towards you has turn to her”

“Now” he continues “Go there and take all the money she vomited. It’s all yours”

I didn’t wait for him to finish the last sentence when I run out from the shrine. I got to the house, the old woman was not there, run to the room, took my bag and run out. I was running in the bush not knowing where I was heading to, but thank God, I came to a roadside, stop a container truck which was heading to Accra, beg the driver and he picked me to Accra”.

In fact we were all shock hearing this scary narrations and unfortunately, my sister didn’t last for three months when she died.
