Screaming the woods

Thought I’d type up a quick post to see if anyone has had an experience like my father had some 30 years back. I’ll get straight into it.

So sometime in the late 80’s, my father was deer hunting on land owned by his grandmother near Star City, Arkansas. It was getting late and he hadn’t seen anything worth shooting. With the sun finally sinking behind the trees, it was getting too dark to see, let alone hunt. My father decided to call it quits and began the long walk back to his truck when he heard a blood-curdling scream in the distance. Stopping dead in his tracks, he heard what sounded like a woman screaming in terrible pain. He paused for a moment and gripped his rifle tightly as he listened to the chilling scream. It came in waves and lasted for close to a minute before the woods became eerily silent. Luckily, the noise sounded like it was off to the North while his truck was to the South. He didn’t waste time getting back. In the days following the occurrence, he spoke with his father and fellow hunters who all seemed to think he had heard the scream of a black panther. My father seems to have come to terms with this explanation but still insists that it was one of the most human-like screams he has ever heard from an animal. It very well may have been a panther he heard, but every time he tells the story and mentions the scream in the woods, I can’t help but think about what could have been making that awful sound.

Peace
